It can also affect your long-term health. Estimates of how many women it affects vary widely from 2 to 26 in every 100 women. This information is about the effects on your long-term health and does not cover specific treatment options for PCOS.<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"sep\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"row \"><div class=\"wpv-grid grid-1-2  wpv-first-level first unextended animation-from-left animated-active\" style=\"padding-top:0px;padding-bottom:0px\" id=\"wpv-column-715e7d8fd7a4bd392f65f28d88cadccc\" ><div class=\"push\" style='height:80px'><\/div>\n<h4>What are polycystic ovaries?<\/h4>\n<p>Polycystic ovaries are slightly larger than normal ovaries and have twice the number of follicles (small cysts). Polycystic ovaries are very common affecting 20 in 100 (20%) of women. Having polycystic ovaries does not mean you have polycystic ovary syndrome. Around 6 or 7 in 100 (6\u20137%) of women with polycystic ovaries have PCOS. Having polycystic ovaries does not necessarily mean that you have PCOS. Some women have very few mild symptoms, while others are affected more severely by a wider range of symptoms.<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"sep\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"row \"><div class=\"wpv-grid grid-1-2  wpv-first-level first unextended\" style=\"padding-top:0px;padding-bottom:0px\" id=\"wpv-column-3ed1ec0bb5abe26cc42a730d4cf96dd2\" ><h4>What causes the polycystic ovary syndrome?<\/h4>\n<p>The cause of the syndrome is not known yet, however it is often familial. If some of your relatives (mother, aunts, sisters) have been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, the risk of that the syndrome occurs to you may be increased.<\/p>\n<p>The symptoms that are related to the abnormal levels of hormones in the blood:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Testosterone<\/strong> is a hormone that is produced in small quantities by the ovaries in all women. Women with PCOS have slightly higher testosterone levels than the normal ones and this is related with many of the symptoms of the disorder.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Insulin<\/strong>\u00a0is a hormone that controls the levels of glucose (a type of sugar) in the blood. If you suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, your body cannot respond to insulin (this is known as insulin resistance), and thus the glucose level is higher. In its attempt to reduce the levels of glucose in the blood, the body produces even more insulin than some other body would produce. The high insulin levels can lead to the increase of body weight, irregular periods, fertility problems and higher levels of testosterone.<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<div class=\"wpv-grid grid-1-2  wpv-first-level unextended\" style=\"padding-top:0px;padding-bottom:0px\" id=\"wpv-column-055f0ff9446e3081ebcf0d6772d95014\" ><h4>How is PCOS diagnosed?<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Having polycystic ovaries does not mean you have PCOS.<br \/>\nWomen with PCOS often have symptoms that come and go, particularly if their weight goes up and down. This can make it a difficult condition to diagnose, which means it may take a while to get a diagnosis.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A diagnosis is made when you have any two of the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>irregular, infrequent periods or no periods at all<\/li>\n<li>an increase in facial or body hair and\/or blood tests that show higher testosterone levels than normal<\/li>\n<li>an ultrasound scan that shows polycystic ovaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n<h4>What could PCOS mean for my long-term health?<\/h4>\n<blockquote><p>If you have PCOS, you are at greater risk of developing the long-term health problems discussed below.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"sep\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wpv-accordion-wrapper wpv-accordion-1\"><svg width=\"0\" height=\"0\"><style>.wpv-accordion-1 .tab .inner { background-color: #3695EB; color: #ffffff; }<\/style><\/svg><ul class=\"wpv-accordion\" data-collapsible=\"1\"><li class=\"pane-wrapper\" style=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"tab\"><span class=\"inner\">Insulin resistance and diabetes<\/span><\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"pane\"><div class=\"inner\"><p>If your blood glucose does not stay normal, this can lead to diabetes. One or two in every ten women with PCOS go on to develop diabetes at some point. If the diabetes is untreated, this can cause damage to organs in the body.<\/p>\n<p>If you have PCOS, your risk of developing diabetes is increased further if you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>are over 40years of age<\/li>\n<li>have relatives with diabetes<\/li>\n<li>developed diabetes during a pregnancy (known as gestational diabetes)<\/li>\n<li>are obese (a body mass index (BMI) of over 30).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are diagnosed with diabetes, you will be given advice about your diet and may be prescribed tablets or insulin injections.<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/li><li class=\"pane-wrapper\" style=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"tab\"><span class=\"inner\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"pane\"><div class=\"inner\"><p>Women with PCOS tend to have high blood pressure, which is likely to be related to insulin resistance and to being overweight rather than to the PCOS itself. High blood pressure can lead to heart problems and should be treated.<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/li><li class=\"pane-wrapper\" style=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"tab\"><span class=\"inner\">Cancer<\/span><\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"pane\"><div class=\"inner\"><p>If you have fewer than three periods a year, the lining of the womb (endometrium) can thicken and this may lead to endometrial cancer in a small number of women.<br \/>\nThere are various ways to protect the lining of the womb using the hormone progestogen. Your doctor will discuss the options with you. This may include a five-day course of progestogen tablets used every three or four months, taking a contraceptive pill or using the intrauterine contraceptive system (Mirena\u00ae). The options will depend on whether you are trying for a baby. PCOS does not increase your chance of breast or ovarian cancer.<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/li><li class=\"pane-wrapper\" style=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"tab\"><span class=\"inner\">Depression and mood swings<\/span><\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"pane\"><div class=\"inner\"><p>The symptoms of PCOS may affect how you see yourself and how you think others see you. It can lower your self-esteem.<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/li><li class=\"pane-wrapper\" style=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"tab\"><span class=\"inner\">Snoring and daytime drowsiness<\/span><\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"pane\"><div class=\"inner\"><p>PCOS can lead to fatigue or sleepiness during the day. It is also associated with snoring.<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n<div class=\"sep\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"row \"><div class=\"wpv-grid grid-1-2  wpv-first-level first unextended animation-zoom-in animated-active\" style=\"padding-top:0px;padding-bottom:0px\" id=\"wpv-column-ee6ca36519977662a67aa031ccd1a503\" ><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><div class=\"push\" style='height:80px'><\/div>\n<h4>What can I do to reduce long-term health risks?<\/h4>\n<p>Have a healthy lifestyle<br \/>\nThe main ways to reduce your overall risk of long-term health problems are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>eat a healthy balanced diet. This should include fruit and vegetables and whole foods (such as wholemeal bread, whole-grain cereals, brown rice and whole-wheat pasta), lean meat, fish and chicken. You should cut down the amount of sugar, salt and caffeine that you eat and drink. You should not drink more alcohol than is recommended (14units a week for women).<\/li>\n<li>eat meals regularly, especially breakfast<\/li>\n<li>take exercise regularly (30 minutes at least three times a week). Your doctor can provide you with full information on eating a healthy diet and exercise. You should aim to keep your weight to a level that is normal.
